 SIN

To get a Social Insurance Number (SIN) Visit Service Canada in Portage Place Mall (393 Portage Ave), or apply online at https://sin-nas.canada.ca/en/Sin/. You will need your birth certificate or proof of Canadian residency to apply. You need a SIN for taxes, for jobs and for many programs including EIA.

 Drivers License or Manitoba ID

Driver License or Manitoba ID is through MPI. It’s helpful for anytime someone asks for photo ID or proof of age. A driver’s license allows you to drive, while a Manitoba ID looks similar, but you are not allowed to drive. You don’t need both IDs, just one or the other.

To get a driver’s license you’ll book an appointment by calling MPI. First you have to take a written test to get a learners and then after some practice, you’ll move on to the road test. You will need a car for the road test.

To get your Manitoba ID visit any Autopac centre/insurance store -they are all over the place including in malls. This ID costs $20 and is good for 5 years. Make sure you bring supporting documents. You need two pieces of ID such as your birth certificate. If you don’t have two pieces, you can use one piece and have someone fill out Declaration of Guarantor for Proof of Identity. We’d suggest getting help from one of the places listed above.
