Alice Mizrachi is a Queens, New York City-based artist, curator, teaching artist and community organizer. Her artistic practice, which is centered on painting and printmaking, focuses on the figure abstracted through color, line and pattern. She is connected to New York’s urban and graffiti art culture, with early works focusing on the vibrant tranquility of city life. Her art also seeks to empower and inspire women and girls by elevating females to sacred archetypes. Mizrachi seeks to spread empathy and compassion through site-specific public art projects that embody positive responses to social issues affecting the neighbourhoods and communities in which her projects are located. She explores art as a path for communities and individuals to heal through creative expression. Mizrachi also co-founded the YOUNITY Arts Collective in 2006. The all-female urban art collective produces a variety of creative enterprises annually including exhibitions, panel discussions, mural productions, and youth workshops. She is a graduate of the Parsons School of Design in New York City and has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and internationally.
ALICE MIZRACHI – ARTIST STATEMENT
I make art to spread feelings of love, community, empowerment and healing. For me painting itself has always been an act of self-healing. As I begin to create, I rebuild the pristine surface of a blank canvas or empty wall with color and pattern. Through the physical experience of painting, I transform my own fears and anxieties about the world into simple characters who are depicted in relationships to others and their environments. These characters convey positive messages, often of hope and optimism, and the characters express emotions that are intentionally accessible to all viewers, especially children. I strive to make art an inclusive experience that allows viewers of any age or level of experience to have a positive interaction with art.
